The heavy iron doors groan as she slips inside, the latch clicking shut with a definitive, heavy CRACK that cuts off the city noise. Inside, the cathedral stretches out in a vast expanse of chilled stone, smelling of old prayers and ancient permanence. Stopping at the carved basin, she dips her fingers into the holy water and crosses herself, the cold shock grounding her. Her fingers trace the cold glass vial resting against her collarbone; she uncaps it and lets it fill before securing the chain back around her neck.
She moves up the aisle, her heels echoing softly in the silence as a cool draft sweeps through the gothic arches, carrying the scent of melted candle wax and smoke.
Approaching the altar, she kneels, clasping her hands together. As the silence presses against her chest, among the cold stone, flickering candles, and haunting silhouettes, she questions the architecture of her life and the sudden, quiet emptiness she carries. She looks up into the deep shadows and finds a fading veil of jasmine, wilting against the stone, mirroring a raw grief for a bloom that never fully opened.
Out of nowhere, the massive organ sounds a low, thundering chord, vibrating through her bones. At the same time, a gust of cold air sweeps over her, snuffing out all the remaining candles. The shadows rush forward as she senses the presence of spirits around her. And just as quickly all is calm.
The comfort is fleeting and confusing. She's left with questions about the unknown and a pain that seems to echo loudly in the quiet. She gets up quickly and hurries toward the outside world.
Pushing the massive iron doors wide, she steps out into the twilight. She looks back at the beauty of the dark spires reaching toward the stars, her heart suspended between absolute wonder and grief. A delicate whisper of powdered sugar and ethereal vanilla unfurls in her wake, a transcendent sweetness cutting through the melancholic chill to honor her soft surrender. She leaves both unsettled and renewed, yet she still can't help but wonder…
Why can't it be beautiful…?
