The rain over the city smells of cold asphalt, but inside the dim sanctuary of the local hangout, the air is thick. It’s the unmistakeable scent of a woman who is too dangerous to love. He closes his eyes, a cloud of almond marzipan and sugar spun marshmallow. Sweet, soft, brutal.
As they leave, he pulls her close under the flickering streetlamp, pouring his entire soul into a desperate kiss. His eyes start to close, blinded by a fierce, unrequited devotion to a woman he believes is his final saving grace. But she turns her head as tears fall from her eyes. His heart pounding, all he can repeat in his mind is “my sweetheart.” He thinks this embrace is a beginning.
But, what he doesn’t know is that it’s a goodbye. As he tries to reach for her again, she simply looks beyond him, staring out into the dark, rain-slicked street. Her face remains a mask of tragedy resolved in walking away.
He loves a version of her that might not actually exist, not for him anyhow. All of a sudden, she seems like a sweet illusion wrapped in mystery and heartache. She gently steps out of his arms, leaving him broken in the downpour. As she melts into the shadows of the alley, she leaves him with nothing but a lingering trail of marzipan sugar and the weight of what might have been.
He wanted forever, but all he could afford was a taste…
