The sun is still high in the pink afternoon sky, so she hides in the shadows of the jagged cliffs. Wiping a single tear from her eye, she feels the sting of a memory. He used to trace the line of her cheek under the stars, promising that the world above would welcome her. It was a lie. He loved the mystery of a mermaid, but he was terrified of the depth it took to keep her.
One unforgiving morning, as the sun started to peak up and over the glistening horizon, he walked away. She knew she’d never see him again. He left her with heavy heart and a tail that kept her from ever standing on dry land.
Slowly, she pushes away from the rocks and floats on her back, letting the gentle sea foam lap against her chin. She closes her eyes, letting the golden sun burn through her lids. Perhaps, she thought, the midday heat could evaporate the ache in her chest, but it simply starts to harden into something else. Suddenly, she’s aware of her own intoxicating aroma, a delicate mix of sun-drenched tropics, island blossoms, and a shimmering salted mineral milk. The sea will always be saltier where she cried. Maybe the next time she finds a human man, he won’t be so lucky. She tilts her head to look up toward the edge of the jagged cliffs. An unsuspecting soul. A man, alone. The sun starts to set as he looks down…the most beautiful sound…she calls to him from the glistening depths. He falls, or had he jumped?
